What is the Treatment for Sleep Apnea
Treatments vary, however they are vital to ensure your sleep improves.
Common treatments include:
- Losing weight
- Quitting smoking
- Sleeping on your side (often in conjunction with a pillow or rubber wedge)
- Reducing alcohol intake
CPAP
The most effective treatment available is a mask worn at night that prevents the throat from collapsing by transmitting increased air pressure to the collapsible segment of the throat.
This is called ‘nasal continuous positive airway pressure’ (CPAP). The key to this treatment is finding a mask and machine that match the needs of a given individual with sleep apnea.
Mouthguard
Another treatment is the use of a mouthguard to hold the jaw forward during sleep. They can be effective for mild to moderate sleep apnea.
Surgery
Surgery may be useful when other therapies fail, and are performed by an ear, nose and throat surgeon.
